“GLASS IS LIFE.” Holmegaard has a long and strong tradition of working with some of today’s most prominent designers and challenging the unique material that glass is. One of the most prolific was Per Lütken who created over 3,000 designs for Holmegaard: “Glass stimulates our senses,” he said. “It is beautiful to look at, great to hold, functional and practical. Most amazing of all, it is both fragile and flexible.” A GLASSMAKER DROPS A LUMP of red-hot molten glass on a wet wooden board. The steam has nowhere to escape, so the mass bulges from the inside. The Provence bowl, designed by Per Lütken in 1955, is a signature product for Holmegaard. It is living proof of how ideas arise when the designer leaves the studio and moves around in the workshop. The self-blown technique follows Per Lütkens thoughts on free form, where the mass co-designs, and no two finished pieces are the same. Per Lütken developed a special technique, which required the glassmaker’s utmost dexterity and precision, to create the characteristic ‘fried egg’ in the middle and the fat edge. Tom Nyboe’s Perfection series of wineglasses is all about treating wine respect and gentle care. The pouring line helps fill the glass to its widest point, where the wine will develop it flavour and taste under optimum conditions. DESIGN—Tom Nybroe 5
